A look at Arnold Air Force Base – Second to one

Located in Coffee and Franklin counties, Tennessee, adjacent to Tullahoma, Arnold Air Force Base (ICAO: KAYX, FAA LID: AYX) is a U.S. Air Force base. General Henry “Hap” Arnold formed the U.S. Air Force during the American Civil War. Since the airfield was decommissioned in 2009, it is no longer active. In addition to helicopter support for Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and the Tennessee Army National Guard, Army aviation assets (helicopters) continue to use Arnold.

There are more than a dozen flight simulation test facilities at Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC), the most advanced, largest, and most comprehensive globally. In addition to 58 wind tunnels for aerodynamics and propulsion, the center has rocket and turbine engine test cells, an arc heater, a ballistic range, a galaxy range, and other specialized facilities. In the Air Force, AEDC is an organization that runs test centers. Colonel Scott A. Cain is the commander, and Mark A. Mehalic is its executive director.

In addition to being home to the AEDC, Arnold hosts rocket test cells, test cells for rocket engines, and environmental chambers for NASA missions. The aerospace engineering development center (AEDC) is part of the Air Force Test Center and Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC). It has a few critical missions and units, including the Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC), the Test Division (TST), the Test Support Division (TSD), as well as the Test Systems Support (TSS).

Within driving distance of the base, the Winchester and Tullahoma areas provide many outdoor recreation opportunities. Rutledge Falls, Short Springs Natural Area, and Beechcraft Heritage Museum are all worth checking out, and Civil War buffs will be in their element exploring the Tullahoma Campaign Civil War Trail.
